Clarence Derwent was a London-born actor who became president of American Actors’ Equity from 1946-52. He established awards on both sides of the Atlantic for actors in supporting roles. The UK awards have been running since 1948 for the best supporting actor and actress during the 12 month period.
The awards are administered by Equity the Actors Union and are highly valued by recipients not least because they represent recognition by actors’ peers.
The judges were Richard Digby Day, Thelma Holt, Kate Bassett, Matt Trueman Susannah Clapp and Equity President Malcolm Sinclair and Jonathan Munby.
Equity announced the awards on its web site which can be viewed here. The Stage newspaper also announced the awards and the article is on their web site here. Eve Polycarpou, Peter’s sister also attended the awards and both are pictured below.
